Hunting for the perfect coffee

As those of you who already know me, you know that I love coffee, so part of my mission here down under is to find the perfect flat white and the perfect cafe. In a way I’ve started in the perfect place as Melbourne is very well known for it’s cafe culture and has in a way started the whole artisan coffee wave. Some say the flat white was invented by Aussies and others argue it was by Kiwi’s.

Where it comes from, I don’t really care, all I know is that I’m on the hunt for the perfect one. So far I have been somewhat disappointed, they have been a little bit too weak for my liking. I’m a Swede at heart and Swedes like they’re coffee strong. Once you’ve had a good strong Flat White, it’s hard to be satisfied with a weaker one. That bitter taste of the strong espresso, mixed with the sweetness of the micro foamed milk… Mmmmm dreamy!

The one I had on Thursday at De Clieu,ย on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy area,ย ย was the best one so far. Whilst we were there we found out that they do free cupping/coffee tasting every Thursday and we managed to squeeze in at the tail end of it and sample the 7 different coffees they had on offer. It was a really interesting experience and I would really love to learn more about it and do it again. De Clieu are part of a company called Seven Seeds, who are a well known and respected coffee roaster and they roast their own coffee in Carlton, Melbourne. They have a total of 3 coffee shops.

We also happened to stumble upon an interesting place where they made their coffee in an old American caravan with seats in both their garden and inside. It was a really hot day and Mat ordered an iced coffee and turned out to give me coffee envy. It was a great simple iced coffee, not the horried version you get from the high street with tons of syrup in. This one had a strong shot of espresso, ice and milk to add in on the side to your liking and the same in case you wanted to sweeten it. It was great!

My hunt continues, I’m intending to visit a lot more coffee shops whilst here and I will keep you posted if I find any more gems.
