For those not fortunate and wealthy enough to take a scenic helicopter flights through the Fiordland National Park – there is the beautifully shot Ata Whenua – Shadowland. A short film of the Fiordland National Park, filmed by Kim Hollows, a helicopter owner and pilot, giving you a unique view of this breathtaking piece of earth in the southwest corner of New Zealand’s south island.
You can view the film at Fiordland Cinema, or you can purchase it on DVD (a bit steep though at 35 NZD). We missed out on the film at the cinema as we had to drive on for the day and didn’t have the time to wait. But the trailer is pretty stunning!
Maori would often refer to the mountain terrain in the Fiordland region as “Ata Whenua”, or “Shadowland” – a land so high and sheer as to rarely permit the sun through every valley.
